The Parent Transparency Dashboard

On 1-9-2018, Michigan Department of Education unveiled their new Parent Transparency Dashboard (PTD). As they say on their website: “This dashboard is Michigan’s newest tool in its commitment to provide transparency about school and district performance. The contents of this dashboard can inform decisions and encourage conversations about how we help all students succeed. The dashboard is designed to be a “living tool” that will be updated as user feedback and new school data become available.”

What is the Parent Transparency DashboarD

The PTD is basically a report card for schools. It is included in the accountability section of Michigan’s ESSA plan and is intended to provide school data to parents and the community. According to the State Board of Education, parents are the intended “end-user” of this tool.

The Dashboard allows parents to compare one school to other schools of similar demographics or in the same geographic location. On the overview page,
there are 8 key indicators that represent indicators required under ESSA.
These indicators include: Performance summary, Progress summary, Graduation Rate, Advanced Coursework, Post-secondary Enrollment, and On-Track Attendance. These indicators can be compared based on all students (default)
or by one of 12 sub-categories. The categories include things  like “students with disabilities,” “economically disadvantaged,” and various ethnic divisions.

In addition to the Overall metrics, there are additional metrics that can be compared. These metrics fall under 2 categories: Student Data and Staff Data
and include things like drop-out rate, expulsion rate,
staff to student ratio, and others.

Finding and Navigating the Parent Transparency Dashboard

The Dashboard can be found at: www.mischooldata.org .

Once there, click on the PTD link and enter the school name you are looking to compare. The overview page compares the selected school to the state average and schools with similar demographics. At the top, under student groups,
you can select all students or one of 12 sub-groups.
To dig down deeper on a school, and to compare by geographic location, click either Student Data or

Staff Data in the blue box to the left on the main page. You then can select from
the drop down menu, the category you are interested in. On the page that comes up, you can select “geographic location” or “demographics”, at the bottom of the page. If you have technical problems with the dashboard go to: cepi@michigan.gov.

What is next?

This is the first phase of 3 phases of implementation of the dashboard.
In the next 2 phases, additional metrics will be added, including a “points of pride” section that allows schools to brag about things they think they are doing well. Michigan PTA continues to work with MDE on focus groups related to new
metrics. Currently we are working on a school safety and climate focus group.
The next phases of the dashboard will be implemented over the next 2 years. Parents can give their feedback on this dashboard on the main dashboard page,
or by going to:
MDE-ParentDashboard@michigan.gov.
