February 15, 2012 Healthy Eating Tip of the Week for Busy Families
#4 – Tempermental Eaters
If you’ve got temperamental eaters, don’t despair, be patient, there are no magic solutions. Kids, like us adults, have different personalities, tolerance levels, patience, moods, etc. What works for one child may not work for another. Don’t make your child clean their plate. Forget that old fashioned way of thinking. We now know that kids, especially children under five, have a good sense of their hunger. They will stop eating when they are full. The portion size they were given may be too much for them. Teaching children to ignore their natural hunger/full signals can lead to obesity and other health issues. Normal, healthy children will not starve; keep offering healthy food choices even if they refuse the first time or two. When children realize that mealtimes are not a battle of wills they generally will begin to eat what is offered.
Wishing you a happy healthy week ahead, Ruthann Jaquette, VP Member Resource Development
