2014-2015 School Year Welcome
from Michigan PTA President Teresa Marhofer

Congratulations and thank you for becoming or continuing on as the leader of your PTA. I believe in you…that you will continue the work as ambassador for the values, mission and vision of PTA. Knowing that you are out working on behalf of the children inspires me to want to be better. I ask that you take that inspiration, that drive, that passion and that enthusiasm out into your communities. Your inspiration is what makes each of you “lightening rods” for change. Your passion is what makes you the wonderful PTA member that you are.

Use your passion to encourage others! Lead those that look to you for direction. Be a mentor to those around you. Be the example that our founders would be proud of.

Michigan PTA and National PTA are here for you and your members. Below is a list of a few things to get started on as well as a few resources to help with this process. In addition, each PTA units is assigned a Field Service Representative to assist them with questions they may have. Your Field Service Representative will be contacting you this fall.

Things to remember and tips on how to maximize the impact of your PTA unit:

  • Over the summer you will want to complete your PTA’s previous years audit and prepare your budget to present at you first PTA meeting.
  • At the same time, you should complete your 990 filing for the IRS.
  • Don’t forget to send copies of the budget, audit and 990 to the State Office in Ann Arbor. The State Office will send an email to confirm that information has reached Michigan PTA.  This confirmation e-mail will be sent to you, as President and the person responsible for oversight of your Unit/Council.
  • Join us for Summer Leadership Academy on Saturday, August 23rd in Royal Oak – there will be a lot of new information and opportunities to network with other PTA leaders. Visit for more information.
  • Participate in the monthly President Calls. Dates and times will be found on the Units/Councils page of the Michigan PTA website (
  • Keep up with the latest information:
    • Join us on Facebook and Twitter
    • Read the Weekly Updates each Thursday
    • Watch for an upgraded website

National PTA has remarkable resources and programs including, but not limited to the Official Back to School Kit, PTA’s National Standards for Family-School Partnerships, the Reflections Program and Take Your Family to School Week. Visit for a lot more information.

Michigan PTA is here for you! Wishing you GREAT success as you get the school year started! Congratulations and thank you again for your commitment to PTA.
