LANSING – The State Board of Education today selected three finalists to move forward in the selection process for the position of State Superintendent. Current State Superintendent Mike Flanagan is retiring at the end of June.

The State Board selected Vickie Markavitch, Scott Menzel, and Brian Whiston to return on Wednesday, March 18 for final interviews.

Markavitch currently is the Superintendent at Oakland Schools; Menzel is the Superintendent at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District; and Whiston is the Superintendent at Dearborn Public Schools.

“The Board’s decision was very difficult, given the tremendous quality and abilities of all interviewed,” said State Board President John C. Austin. “I thank everyone who stepped forward and offered their services to the parents, school children, and educators of Michigan.”

The Board spent the past two days interviewing the six semi-final candidates from a roster of over 50 who applied for the position from Michigan and around the country. After the last interview today, the Board voted to advance the three candidates for the next phase in the selection process.

All of the interviews have been, and will be, open to the public.

The interviews next Wednesday will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the State Board Room on the fourth floor of the Hannah Building in Lansing. The State Board will deliberate following those interviews and possibly announce then its selection for the next State Superintendent.
