Michigan Parent Teacher Association
Honors the life of late State Superintendent Brian Whiston

ANN ARBOR – Today the Michigan Parent Teacher Association (Michigan PTA) is saddened by the news of the passing of State Superintendent Brian Whiston.

Whiston served as State Superintendent from his appointment in July 2015, and Superintendent of Dearborn (MI) Public Schools – the state’s third largest school district – from 2008 to 2015. Prior to that, he served 10 years as Director of Government and Community Services for the Oakland County ISD, Mr. Whiston consistently demonstrated his ability to work with state government to bring financial resources to schools, lead his department to improved student achievement, and help make all schools in the county successful. He also served as a local school board member for 17 years and held the position of President-Elect of the Michigan Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA)—a position he had to relinquish to serve more students as Superintendent.

On April 21, 2018, Superintendent Whiston joined almost 200 passionate child advocates and supporters to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Michigan PTA where he was honored as an Exemplary Child Advocate and received another Honorary Life Membership to Michigan PTA

“Superintendent Whiston was adamant about moving education in Michigan forward and taking us to the top,” said Sibyl Collins Wilson, President of Michigan PTA. “He made sure that the parent voice was included at the table. We are devastated at this loss, but am confident—as he reminded us in what would be his farewell to the Association—that we will continue this work.”

Michigan PTA, a branch of the National PTA, is comprised of over 40,000 members in numerous PTA units throughout the state of Michigan.
