Michigan PTA Celebrates 100 Years

Michigan PTA’s Centennial Celebration is here!  The volunteer organization was formed on May 19, 1918 in Battle Creek.  Past presidents and leaders who served on the Michigan PTA over the last thirty years have come together, swapping stories, digging up memorabilia and raising funds to celebrate an organization that has advocated for every child in our state for 100 years.

It’s amazing that a volunteer organization comprised primarily of parents has sustained this long.  However, never underestimate parents when it comes to taking care of our children.  The Michigan PTA is indeed alive and well and dedicated to continuing their great work for the next 100 years.

Our website (michiganpta.org) lists facts about dedication of volunteers and our work in working to help the children of Michigan achieve better lives physically, emotionally and academically.  Take a look, share your PTA story, and consider donating to the organization.

On April 21, 2018 the community will come together at Lovett Hall in Dearborn to honor those who have served in exemplary fashion on behalf of children. Exemplary Advocate Awards will be given to those who have excelled at working on behalf of children throughout Michigan:  Dr. Herman Gray (Wayne State), Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha (Bronson Flint), Kathleen Straus (Advocate), Brian Whiston (MDE Superintendent), and the organization Michigan’s Children, represented by Matt Gillard. National PTA President, Jim Accomando and Dr. Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) will be the Keynote Speakers. DPSCD recently selected PTA as the official parent group for the District.

The luncheon is open to all; sponsorship tables, silent donation opportunities and ads are available. There will be entertainment by local students, a reception, historical and Reflections (art program) displays and silent auction. This year’s Fran Anderson Scholarship will be presented also. Any proceeds will benefit youth programs and scholarships. For more information about donating, luncheon tickets and luncheon sponsors contact Barbara Blanchard, Centennial Chair at centennial@michiganpta.org or 734.975.9500.
